SIG P320 Compatibility Guide

FCUs, Grip Modules, Slides, Barrels, Magazines & Optics

The P320 is one of the most modular handgun platforms ever produced. That still doesn't mean every P320-marked component fits every FCU, grip module, caliber, slide length, magazine or optic cut.

FCU   |   Grip Module   |   Slide   |   Barrel   |   Recoil Assembly   |   Magazine   |   Optics

The FCU is the center of the P320 system.

SIG's serialized Fire Control Unit contains the core fire-control components and can be removed from the polymer or metal grip module.

That lets one compatible FCU move between different grip sizes, slide lengths and configurations.

The mistake is turning that sentence into “every P320 part fits every P320.”

The P320 is modular around compatibility families—not around the word “P320” stamped on the box.

Think in Compatibility Chains

FCU → Grip Module → Magazine
FCU → Slide → Barrel → Recoil Assembly
Slide → Optic Cut → Optic / Plate / Screws

If one link belongs to the wrong family, “P320 compatible” somewhere else in the description does not rescue the build.

1. Fire Control Unit: The Serialized Core

SIG defines the FCU as the removable serialized frame containing major functional components such as the trigger, sear and slide-catch lever.

SIG's Custom Works standalone P320 FCU was specifically marketed around the ability to choose:

  • Grip module.
  • Slide.
  • Barrel.
  • Guide / recoil spring assembly.
  • Optic.
  • Complete caliber-exchange assemblies.

The FCU creates the modular platform. The surrounding components still have their own compatibility rules.

2. There Is More Than One P320 FCU Compatibility Family

This is one of the biggest traps in the platform.

Family SIG's Current Compatibility Pattern
9mm / .357 SIG / .40 S&W Common standard P320 FCU family used by the traditional modular P320 ecosystem.
10mm / .45 ACP SIG's current XTEN/.45 grip modules identify these as a separate FCU compatibility family and specifically say they are not compatible with 9/.40/.357 FCUs.

SIG's current TXG 9/.40/.357 grip module also specifically says the XTEN FCU is not compatible.

“P320 FCU” Is Not Specific Enough

Before ordering a grip module or conversion components, identify which caliber/FCU family you actually own. A 10mm/.45-compatible P320 component can look almost identical in photographs while being specifically excluded from the standard 9/.40/.357 family.

3. Manual-Safety vs. Non-Safety Grip Modules

A P320 FCU equipped with an external manual safety needs a grip module designed with clearance for the safety levers.

SIG sells specific manual-safety versions of its standard, X-Series, TXG and XTEN grip modules.

The opposite problem exists too. SIG's AXG grip-module listing specifically states that its non-safety configuration will not work with a manual-safety FCU.

Check the FCU and the exact grip-module description. Don't assume every grip can accept every safety configuration.

4. Magazine-Disconnect Compatibility Can Matter Too

SIG's current grip-module specifications include a separate Magazine Disconnect Compatible field.

Some modules are marked compatible and others are explicitly marked not compatible.

If your FCU uses a magazine-disconnect configuration, verify that specification instead of assuming the physical FCU shell dropping into the grip means the assembled system is compatible.

5. “Full,” “Carry,” “Compact” and “XCompact” Describe More Than One Dimension

With the P320, grip length and slide length are not permanently married together.

The M17 and M18 demonstrate this perfectly:

Model Slide / Barrel Grip Length
P320-M17 Full-size 4.7" barrel / slide Carry-size grip
P320-M18 Compact 3.9" barrel / slide Carry-size grip

That alone should kill the idea that the word Carry automatically tells you the slide length.

Common P320 Slide / Barrel Length Families

Common Length Typical SIG Naming Notes
3.6" XCompact / Subcompact-length slide Commonly paired with compact/XCompact grip modules and 15-round 9mm magazines.
3.9" Compact / Carry-length slide Used by configurations such as M18 and XCarry.
4.7" Full-size slide Used by full-size P320s and the M17; can pair with some Carry-length grips.
~5" X-FIVE / competition-length configurations Requires a grip / slide arrangement specifically intended to clear the longer assembly.

P320 product families and aftermarket terminology overlap. Always verify the exact slide/barrel specification instead of ordering by the words “Compact” or “Carry” alone.

6. Grip-Module Dust-Cover Length Matters

One FCU may physically fit several grips, but the grip's dust-cover length determines how it looks and whether it properly surrounds the slide / recoil assembly.

SIG's XCompact grip listing explicitly warns that it is not designed around the full-size 4.7-inch slide because the shorter dust cover can leave the recoil spring / guide-rod area exposed.

Meanwhile, SIG's standard Compact manual-safety grip is specifically listed as accommodating 4.7-, 3.9- and 3.6-inch slide configurations.

That's why we verify the exact grip-module family rather than making one universal slide-length rule for every P320 grip.

Carry Grip Does Not Mean Compact Magazine

Carry-size P320 grips generally retain the longer full-size magazine well while using a shorter slide/dust-cover relationship.

That's why the M18 can use a 3.9-inch compact-length slide while still using 17-round full/carry-length magazines.

Grip length governs magazine fit. Slide length governs the upper assembly. They are related, but not the same specification.

7. Slide, Barrel & Recoil Assembly Should Be Treated as a System

The slide establishes the barrel and recoil-assembly envelope.

A correct P320 upper assembly requires the appropriate:

  • Slide length.
  • Barrel length / lockup geometry.
  • Caliber.
  • Recoil spring / guide assembly.
  • FCU/caliber family.

Don't build upper compatibility from barrel length alone.

Recoil Assembly Follows the Upper — Not the Grip

SIG's current owner's manual separately identifies the full-size recoil spring guide assembly from the Carry / Compact / Subcompact assembly. Changing the grip module does not magically change what recoil assembly the slide needs. Match the recoil system to the actual slide/barrel configuration.

8. A Barrel Must Match More Than the Caliber

Two barrels can both say “P320 9mm” and still belong to different slide-length families.

Verify:

  • Caliber.
  • Barrel length.
  • Slide length / generation.
  • Threaded vs. non-threaded configuration.
  • Loaded-chamber-indicator compatibility where applicable.
  • Manufacturer fitment requirements.

9. Magazine Fit Starts With Grip Length

The grip module establishes the magazine-well length.

Common 9mm Grip Family Common Magazine Relationship
Compact / XCompact Commonly 15-round flush-fit magazine length.
Carry Commonly accepts 17-round full/carry-length magazines.
Full Size Commonly 17-round flush-fit, with longer extended magazines available.

Longer compatible magazines may extend below shorter grip modules. Shorter magazines physically cannot occupy a longer magazine well if the baseplate/body stops them before the magazine catch engages.

10. X-Series Grip Modules Created a Magazine Baseplate Compatibility Trap

SIG repeatedly warns on its current X-Series grip-module pages that older P320 magazines with the older “SIG SAUER” marked baseplate can interfere with X-Series grip modules.

Newer magazines use the circular SIG logo and revised baseplate / locking-tab geometry.

An old magazine may still be mechanically usable with the correct updated basepad / locking plate, but magazine body caliber and baseplate fit are two separate compatibility questions.

11. Add a Magwell and the Baseplate Question Gets Even More Important

A magazine that fits the grip without a magwell may interfere once a funnel is installed.

SIG's X5/TXG documentation specifically limits which factory baseplates fit correctly with its extended magwell.

When adding an aftermarket or factory magwell, verify the magazine body, capacity, basepad and magwell together.

P320 Grip Modules Are Now an Entire Ecosystem

Factory P320 grip families now include:

  • Standard polymer.
  • X-Series polymer.
  • TXG tungsten-infused polymer.
  • AXG aluminum.
  • Manual-safety variants.
  • 9/.40/.357 variants.
  • 10mm/.45 variants.

Aftermarket makers add even more material, rail, weight, ergonomics and dust-cover combinations.

Grip Compatibility and Grip Behavior Are Different Questions

A polymer X-Carry, tungsten-heavy TXG and aluminum AXG can all support P320 modularity while changing weight, balance, recoil feel, grip geometry, magwell compatibility and accessory fit. “It accepts the FCU” doesn't mean the finished pistol behaves the same.

12. “P320 Optic Ready” Does Not Identify the Optic Footprint

SIG has used more than one optics-cut generation on the P320.

SIG Cut Family Compatibility
Legacy ROMEO1 Cut Original ROMEO1-generation optics-ready P320s. SIG specifically says newer PRO-footprint optics are not simply the same cut.
PRO / R2 / Modern PRO Family Designed around ROMEO1PRO / ROMEO2 / ROMEO-X PRO-type compatibility, with specific newer slide configurations offering additional DPP/RMR-pattern support.

SIG's current ROMEO-RS PRO listing specifically says it fits the P320 PRO cut and does not fit original ROMEO1-cut pistols.

Newer PRO Slides Have Expanded Again

SIG's current 2026 P320 Pro Series lists its newer SIG-LOC PRO optic-ready system as supporting ROMEO-X SIG-LOC and DeltaPoint Pro / RMR-footprint optics.

That makes one rule even more important: identify the exact slide generation before buying the optic, plate or screws.

Do Not Buy a P320 Optic From the Model Name Alone

“P320 compatible” can refer to a legacy ROMEO1 cut, PRO/R2 cut, newer SIG-LOC PRO arrangement or an aftermarket plate solution. Verify the actual slide footprint and screw pattern before mounting anything.

13. M17 / M18 Compatibility Still Needs Model-Specific Verification

The commercial M17 and M18 live inside the P320 ecosystem and share significant FCU / grip architecture.

But these models can introduce:

  • Manual safeties.
  • Loaded-chamber-indicator barrel / slide details.
  • Military-style optic plate / sight arrangements.
  • Model-specific slide and barrel configurations.

Don't reduce M17/M18 compatibility to “it's just another P320” when ordering model-sensitive parts.

14. Older Used P320s: Check Voluntary Upgrade Status

SIG continues to maintain its P320 Voluntary Upgrade Program for pistols manufactured before the upgraded configuration introduced in 2017.

SIG states that the upgrade changed components in the metal receiver / FCU and slide rather than fundamentally changing ordinary full-size, compact and carry grip modules.

If you're buying an older used P320, upgrade status belongs on the inspection list along with caliber, FCU and slide generation.

Aftermarket Doesn't Mean Wrong — It Means Verify the New Interface

The P320 aftermarket is one of the platform's biggest strengths.

Aftermarket manufacturers offer:

  • Grip modules.
  • Metal chassis/grip systems.
  • Slides.
  • Barrels.
  • Triggers.
  • Recoil systems.
  • Compensators.
  • Magazine extensions.
  • Optic plates and mounting systems.

A thoughtfully chosen aftermarket part can absolutely improve ergonomics, recoil behavior, trigger feel or optics capability. We just re-check the compatibility chain every time a component changes.

Compensators Change More Than Overall Length

A P320 compensator build can change:

  • Required barrel type / thread.
  • Effective upper length.
  • Grip-module dust-cover relationship.
  • Recoil-spring requirements.
  • Slide velocity.
  • Ammunition sensitivity.

We'll handle compensator and recoil tuning in its own P320 Forge File instead of pretending the comp is just a cosmetic barrel extension.

P320 Compatibility Matrix

Component Usually Interchangeable? Verify
9/.40/.357 FCU between compatible grips Often yes. Safety cut, magazine disconnect, grip caliber family.
9/.40/.357 FCU into 10mm/.45 grip No on current SIG XTEN/.45 modules. Exact FCU family.
Manual-safety FCU into non-safety grip Not automatically. Grip must have proper safety clearance.
3.6 / 3.9 / 4.7 slides between grips Sometimes. Specific grip-module dust cover and SIG fitment listing.
Barrel between different slide lengths Do not assume. Barrel length, slide, lockup, caliber and manufacturer.
Recoil assembly between full / compact systems No universal interchangeability. Exact slide/barrel family.
Old magazine in X-Series grip May require newer baseplate / locking plate. Basepad generation and magwell.
ROMEO1 optic on PRO slide Not automatically. Legacy ROMEO1 vs. PRO/R2/SIG-LOC cut.
M17/M18 aftermarket component Often, but model sensitive. Manual safety, LCI, slide length and optics arrangement.

The IronKells P320 Compatibility Check

  1. Identify the FCU caliber family.
  2. Determine manual-safety / non-safety configuration.
  3. Check magazine-disconnect compatibility if applicable.
  4. Identify exact grip-module family and magazine-well length.
  5. Confirm grip dust-cover length against the slide.
  6. Match slide, barrel and recoil assembly as a set.
  7. Verify caliber across FCU, slide, barrel and magazine.
  8. Check magazine body length and baseplate generation.
  9. If using a magwell, verify basepad clearance.
  10. Identify the exact optic cut before buying a red dot or plate.
  11. For M17/M18, verify safety, LCI and model-specific details.
  12. For older used P320s, check voluntary-upgrade status.
  13. After changes, perform the exact manufacturer's function / safety verification before relying on the pistol.

What People Commonly Get Wrong

“All P320 FCUs are interchangeable.”

SIG's current products separate the standard 9/.40/.357 family from 10mm/.45-compatible FCU/grip configurations.

“Carry means 3.9-inch slide.”

Grip size and slide size can differ. The M17 uses a Carry-size grip with a 4.7-inch full-size upper.

“If the FCU drops into the grip, everything is compatible.”

Safety clearance, caliber family, magazine disconnect, slide/dust-cover length and magazine fit still matter.

“Any 9mm P320 barrel fits any 9mm P320 slide.”

Barrel and slide length / geometry still need to match.

“Every P320 magazine fits every P320 grip.”

Grip length, caliber, old/new baseplate geometry and magwells can all change fit.

“Optic-ready P320 means DeltaPoint Pro / RMR / ROMEO all bolt straight on.”

SIG has used multiple optic-cut generations. Verify the exact cut and screw pattern.

“Aftermarket means less reliable.”

Good aftermarket engineering can improve the pistol. Compatibility and proper setup still need to be verified rather than assumed.

The IronKells P320 Standard

The modularity is one of the best things about the P320.

We're not interested in turning that into OEM-only conservatism. Grip modules, tungsten frames, metal AXG-style systems, tuned recoil assemblies, quality triggers, compensators and aftermarket slides can all make the gun better for a particular shooter.

We just want every upgrade to make mechanical sense inside the compatibility chain.

The Bottom Line

The P320 really is modular.

That's exactly why compatibility has to be understood instead of assumed.

FCU family. Safety configuration. Grip length. Dust-cover length. Slide. Barrel. Recoil assembly. Magazine. Baseplate. Magwell. Optic cut.

Modular doesn't mean random. Build the compatibility chain.
