SIG P320 Caliber Conversion & Parts Compatibility Guide

What the serialized FCU actually lets you change, which P320 calibers live in the same compatibility family, where .45 ACP and 10mm split away from 9mm/.40/.357, and which slide, barrel, recoil, magazine and grip-module details still have to match.

P320   |   FCU Families   |   9mm / .40 / .357 SIG   |   .45 ACP / 10mm   |   Parts Compatibility

The Short Version

The P320 is modular. It is not one universal pile of interchangeable parts.

SIG's own current parts documentation groups 9mm, .40 S&W and .357 SIG together as one common FCU/grip-module family. SIG's standalone Custom Works FCU was specifically described as compatible with those three calibers. [S2, S3]

Current SIG documentation for .45 ACP and 10mm uses a different large-caliber FCU/grip-module family and explicitly says those modules are not compatible with 9/40/.357 FCUs. [S5, S6]

The FCU Is the Heart of the P320 — Not a Universal Adapter

The entire P320 idea starts with the serialized Fire Control Unit. SIG describes the FCU as the component that houses the trigger, sear, slide catch and other key fire-control parts, and the company built the P320 around the ability to move that serialized unit into different compatible grips, barrels and slides. [S1]

That modularity is real. It is also the reason bad compatibility advice spreads so easily. Somebody moves one FCU between two 9mm grip modules and suddenly the internet turns that into: everything P320 fits everything P320.

Wrong mental model. Think of the P320 as a modular architecture with several compatibility layers: FCU family, caliber, slide/barrel group, recoil system, grip-module size, magazine family, manual-safety configuration, optic system, and finally the accessories around the completed gun.

P320 Caliber Families — The Compatibility Split That Matters Most

SIG's current parts pages make the split unusually clear: 9mm/.40/.357 modules are identified as compatible with 9/40/357 FCUs, while current .45/10mm modules say they are for 10mm/.45 FCUs and exclude 9/40/357 FCUs. [S3, S5, S6]

FCU / Module Family Calibers Grouped Together by SIG What This Means Main Trap
Standard P320 FCU family 9mm Luger / .40 S&W / .357 SIG Current SIG grip modules and the Custom Works FCU group these three together. [S2, S3] Same FCU family does not mean one barrel, magazine or slide configuration fits all three.
Large-caliber P320 / XTEN family .45 ACP / 10mm Auto Current SIG large-caliber grip modules are marked for 10mm/.45 FCUs. [S5, S6] These modules are explicitly not compatible with 9/40/.357 FCUs.

9mm, .40 S&W and .357 SIG — Same FCU Family, Different Working Parts

SIG's standalone Custom Works P320 FCU was announced as compatible with 9mm, .357 SIG and .40 S&W. Current factory grip modules continue to use the same 9/40/357 compatibility grouping. [S2, S3]

SIG's operator manual also describes the P320 as offered in 9mm and .45 Auto with caliber-exchange support for .40 and .357 SIG. [S4] That is the factory-level reason you can treat 9/.40/.357 as one modular family.

But the conversion is still a system conversion. The correct question is not “will this FCU fire another caliber?” The correct question is “does this FCU sit inside a complete, compatible caliber/size configuration?”

Treat a Factory-Style Caliber Conversion as a Matched Package

SIG's P320 Studio was built around choosing the FCU, grip module, slide, barrel, guide/spring system and complete CAL-X configurations as a matched build. [S2]

That is the right compatibility model: use the correct upper, recoil system, magazine and grip-module/FCU family together. Do not reduce a complete-caliber conversion to “I found a barrel that drops into my slide.”

What Actually Changes in a P320 Caliber Conversion?

Part / System Why It Matters Conversion Rule
FCU Serialized chassis and fire-control architecture. First identify whether you have the 9/40/357 family or the large-caliber .45/10mm family.
Slide Breechface, extractor relationship, mass, optic cut, barrel/recoil compatibility. Treat the slide as part of the caliber/size package unless the exact manufacturer documents otherwise.
Barrel Chamber, bore, locking geometry and cartridge support are caliber-specific. Must match the target caliber and exact slide-length family.
Recoil assembly Controls slide travel and return; size and upper geometry matter. Use the assembly specified for that upper rather than assuming one spring unit covers every conversion.
Magazine Cartridge body, feed lips, stack geometry, grip length and basepad all matter. Use the correct caliber and grip-length magazine family.
Grip module FCU family, magazine length, dust-cover length, manual-safety cut and magwell clearance. Match both the caliber family and completed upper/grip-length configuration. [S3, S5, S6]
Holster / optic / accessories Conversion can change slide length, muzzle length, optic setup, controls and external dimensions. Re-verify the finished gun, not the name on the FCU.

Caliber Conversion and Size Conversion Are Two Different Axes

The P320 can change caliber and physical size, but those are separate compatibility questions. A 9/40/357 grip module can be the correct caliber family and still be the wrong length for the upper you are trying to run.

SIG's current XCompact 9/40/357 module is intended around compact/subcompact slide lengths and specifically warns that a full-size upper leaves the front system exposed. Other Carry and Full modules are designed around different upper lengths. [S7]

Translation: “P320 9mm grip” still is not enough information. You need caliber family, grip length, slide length, safety configuration and magazine length.

Manual-Safety FCUs Add Another Compatibility Layer

M17/M18-style manual-safety FCUs require grip modules cut for the safety levers. SIG sells current 9/40/357 modules specifically for manual-safety FCUs and identifies them separately from non-manual-safety modules. [S8]

If your conversion changes the grip module, verify the safety configuration first. Caliber compatibility does not override manual-safety compatibility.

.45 ACP Is Not a Drop-In Destination for a 9/40/357 FCU

This is the line that gets blurred most often in generic P320 compatibility conversations.

SIG's current P320/XTEN .45 ACP XFULL grip module explicitly says it is not compatible with 9/40/.357 SIG FCUs. [S5] SIG's current 9/40/357 modules likewise live in their own FCU family. [S3]

So if somebody tells you a normal 9mm P320 FCU only needs a .45 slide, barrel and magazine, stop there. Current SIG factory documentation does not support that claim.

10mm Lives on the Large-Caliber Side of the Family Tree

SIG introduced the P320-XTEN around a 10mm/.45 Auto grip-module architecture. Current SIG XCARRY modules are explicitly marked compatible with 10mm/.45 ACP FCUs only. [S6, S9]

That means 10mm belongs with the large-caliber FCU/grip family — not the standard 9/40/357 FCU family.

It also means we should avoid swinging too far in the other direction and saying “all .45 and 10mm parts interchange.” SIG grouping the FCUs and grip modules together proves a family relationship. It does not prove every barrel, slide, recoil assembly and magazine combination is universal. Verify the exact upper and magazine.

Practical Conversion Matrix

Starting Family Target Factory Compatibility Read What Still Must Match
9mm FCU .40 S&W Same 9/40/357 FCU family. [S2, S3] Caliber-correct upper, barrel, recoil assembly, magazine, compatible grip size.
9mm FCU .357 SIG Same 9/40/357 FCU family. [S2, S3] Caliber-correct upper, barrel, recoil assembly, magazine, compatible grip size.
.40 FCU .357 SIG Same FCU family. Do not assume factory approval for a barrel-only swap; verify the exact slide/barrel/recoil/magazine combination.
.357 SIG FCU .40 S&W Same FCU family. Same caution: validate the exact upper and magazine instead of assuming a barrel-only conversion.
9/40/357 FCU .45 ACP No — different FCU family. [S5] Large-caliber FCU plus matching .45 configuration.
9/40/357 FCU 10mm No — current XTEN/.45 modules exclude 9/40/357 FCUs. [S6] Large-caliber FCU plus exact 10mm upper, recoil and magazine setup.
.45 / 10mm FCU family Other large-caliber configuration SIG groups current grip-module compatibility around 10mm/.45 FCUs. [S6] Exact FCU revision, slide, barrel, recoil assembly, magazine and grip still need verified.

What About a Barrel-Only .40 ↔ .357 SIG Swap?

You will see barrel-only .40/.357 conversions discussed constantly because the two cartridges are closely related and many pistol platforms have aftermarket barrel solutions.

For this Forge File, the factory baseline matters: the SIG sources reviewed do not give us a blanket factory statement that any P320 .40 slide can be converted to .357 SIG — or vice versa — by changing only the barrel.

So we are not turning common internet practice into an OEM compatibility rule. If a specific aftermarket barrel manufacturer documents a conversion for your exact slide, follow that manufacturer's fit list and validate the finished pistol. Otherwise treat the conversion as a matched upper-system question.

Magazines Are Part of the Caliber Conversion

The magazine is not an accessory hanging off the bottom of the conversion. It is part of the feed system.

Different calibers change cartridge diameter, case geometry, feed-lip requirements and stack behavior. Different grip lengths change which magazine bodies physically fit. X-Series magwells and older/newer P320 basepad designs create another compatibility layer even within the correct caliber. SIG still warns on current X-Series grip-module pages that older “SIG SAUER” basepads can conflict with newer X grips. [S3]

A magazine that locks into the grip is not automatically the correct feeding magazine for the conversion. Use the separate P320 Magazine Compatibility & Troubleshooting Guide when you are mixing grip lengths, old/new basepads, magwells or extensions.

Before You Buy Parts — Verify These Nine Things

  1. FCU family: 9/40/357 or .45/10mm.
  2. Manual-safety configuration: safety-cut and non-safety grip modules are not the same thing.
  3. Target caliber: chamber/barrel and magazine have to match it.
  4. Slide length: Full, Carry/Compact, XCompact/Subcompact and compensated systems are not interchangeable by name alone.
  5. Barrel length / geometry: match the exact slide system.
  6. Recoil assembly: match the completed upper, not just the FCU.
  7. Grip-module length: verify dust-cover relationship and magazine length.
  8. Magazine family / basepad: correct caliber, correct body length and correct basepad/magwell relationship.
  9. Finished configuration: optics, lights, holster, sights and accessories may need re-verified after the conversion.
“P320 .40 Part” Is Still Not Enough Information

A caliber label tells you one dimension of the build. It does not tell you FCU family, slide length, safety configuration, optic cut, grip length, magazine body, magwell, recoil system or holster geometry. Buy around the exact configuration, not the shortest product title.

If the Converted P320 Does Not Run, Follow the System

A conversion adds variables. That does not make the conversion a bad idea. It means you diagnose the new configuration instead of assuming the serialized FCU magically guarantees function.

  • Confirm the correct caliber magazine and that it seats fully in the chosen grip module.
  • Confirm slide, barrel and recoil assembly belong to the same intended configuration.
  • Use known-good factory ammunition before tuning around one questionable load.
  • Check for chambering, extraction or ejection symptoms before changing springs.
  • If the grip module or magwell changed, verify basepad clearance and magazine seating behavior.
  • Change one variable at a time and validate the exact configuration you intend to keep.

The Point of P320 Modularity Is More Choice — Not Less Thinking

We are not interested in turning this into a “leave it stock” sermon. The whole reason the P320 is interesting is that one serialized core can support very different roles and configurations.

A properly selected conversion can give you a different caliber, different slide length, different grip length, different recoil characteristics or a completely different use case without replacing the serialized core — inside the compatibility limits of that FCU family.

The smarter build is not automatically the one with fewer aftermarket or modular parts. It is the one where every part was chosen because it fits the system and the finished pistol proves it works.

Build the Configuration — Not the Assumption.

Identify the FCU family, match the upper, recoil system, grip and magazine, then prove the complete pistol together.

Primary weight was given to SIG SAUER's current operator-manual material and current SIG product compatibility pages. Older SIG material is used only where it documents the architecture behind the modular FCU system. Current product-fit language controls when the two conflict.
